About Scent Bonding
What is scent bonding?
Scent bonding is the natural way babies recognize and find comfort in their mother's familiar smell. From the earliest days of life, even in the womb, babies use scent as a primary signal of safety and connection. Scent bonding tools like Snuggle Stitch let you intentionally keep mom's calming scent close to baby, even during moments when you can't be there in person.
What is the Snuggle Patch and how does it actually work?
The Snuggle Patch is a soft, breathable cotton cloth that absorbs and holds mom's natural scent. Mom wears the Patch tucked inside the Mama Midi's internal pocket for as long as possible, ideally 12 hours or more on the first wear, so the fabric can really take on her scent. Once it smells like her, the Snuggle Patch snaps securely into baby's Snuggle Suit pocket, bringing that calming, familiar comfort close to baby in a way that's also safe for sleep. It's a simple way to keep mom present, even when she's not in the room.
What is a bonding heart, and how is the Snuggle Patch different?
For decades, NICU families have used "bonding hearts," small fabric hearts that carry mom's scent, to comfort babies when they can't be held. The Snuggle Patch is our modern take on this meaningful practice. Unlike traditional bonding hearts, the Snuggle Patch features original artwork, is made with 100% cotton inside and out, and includes a secure snap that attaches directly to the Snuggle Suit, so there are no loose items in the crib. It was designed from the start to follow safe sleep guidelines.
Why does scent bonding matter?
A mother's familiar scent signals safety to a baby's nervous system. Research, particularly in NICU settings, has shown that maternal scent can help reduce stress responses, support more restful sleep, encourage oxytocin release, and help stabilize a baby's heart rate. Scent isn't a replacement for being there, but it's a powerful way to bring mom's familiar presence close when you can't be.
When & How to Use Snuggle Stitch
When should I use Snuggle Stitch?
Snuggle Stitch is designed for the moments when mom and baby are apart, big and small. That includes sleep training, daycare transitions, NICU stays, returning to work, and the everyday moments when you need to set baby down to take a shower, switch the laundry, or simply have both hands free.
What if I'm not breastfeeding? Can I still use Snuggle Stitch?
Yes. Scent bonding is about your natural, familiar scent, which your baby recognizes regardless of how they're fed. Whether you formula feed, combo feed, or breastfeed, you can wear the Mama Midi or tuck the Snuggle Patch in your bra to transfer your scent. Every mom's scent is comforting to her baby.
How long should I wear the Mama Midi before transferring the Snuggle Patch to baby?
For the strongest scent transfer, wear the Mama Midi (with the Patch tucked in the internal breast pocket) for at least 12 hours, or as long as possible. The longer the Patch is close to your body, the more your natural scent it absorbs. That's why the Mama Midi was designed to be comfortable enough to wear 24/7, day or night.
If you do not have the Mama Midi, tucking the Snuggle Patch in your bra will do the trick.
Can I really wear the Mama Midi all day and night?
Yes, that's exactly what it's designed for. The Mama Midi is a robe-meets-nightgown hybrid built for the realities of postpartum life. The buttons in the front allow for easy nursing and pumping. The pull-up sleeves are an innovative design so you can wash bottles, give baby a bath, or switch the laundry without having to get your sleeves wet. Nap in it, lounge in it, run errands in it. The internal pocket holds the Snuggle Patch close all the while.
How does the Snuggle Patch attach to the Snuggle Suit?
The Snuggle Suit has a secure outer pocket with a built-in snap. Once mom has worn the Snuggle Patch long enough to absorb her scent, the Snuggle Patch snaps and tucks into the Suit's pocket. This patent-pending pocket-and-snap system was designed specifically for safe sleep, keeping the Patch fully secured with no loose ends or risk of detachment in the crib.
How long can baby wear the Snuggle Suit with the Patch in it?
There's no time limit. The Snuggle Patch can stay tucked in the Snuggle Suit whether baby is awake or asleep. That said, we recommend that mom wear the Patch whenever baby is awake, so it can continue to absorb more of your scent and be ready to comfort baby when they need it next.
Can I wash the Snuggle Patch?
Yes, but washing will remove mom's scent. If you need to wash it, place it in a garment bag and wash on a cold, gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry. Then start the scent-bonding process again by wearing it inside your Mama Midi or tucked in your bra.
Safety & Safe Sleep
Is the Snuggle Patch safe for sleep?
Yes. The Snuggle Patch was designed with safe sleep guidelines in mind. Unlike traditional bonding hearts or loose comfort items, the Snuggle Patch is designed to be snapped and tucked into baby's Snuggle Suit pocket, so nothing comes loose in the crib. Every piece of Snuggle Stitch has been tested to U.S. children's product safety standards.
What materials are Snuggle Stitch products made of?
Every piece of Snuggle Stitch is made with OEKO-TEX® certified cotton. That means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances and certified safe for direct contact with sensitive skin, including newborns. The Snuggle Suit is a 100% cotton muslin footless romper. The Snuggle Patch is 100% cotton inside and out.
Has Snuggle Stitch been safety tested?
Yes. All Snuggle Stitch products have been independently tested to comply with U.S. children's product safety standards (CPSIA). We hold a Children's Product Certificate (CPC) on file and can provide documentation upon request.
How the Snuggle Patch Compares
How is the Snuggle Patch different from a lovey, comfort blanket, or stuffed animal?
Loveys, comfort blankets, and stuffed animals are loose items, which is why the AAP recommends keeping them out of the crib during the first year of life. The Snuggle Patch is different in two important ways. First, it's intentionally scent-bonded with mom's natural smell, which research has shown can help babies feel calmer and sleep more soundly. Second, the Patch attaches securely to the Snuggle Suit via our patent-pending pocket-and-snap system, so it can be used safely during sleep, unlike traditional comfort items.
Does the Snuggle Patch only work with the Snuggle Suit?
The secure snap attachment between the Snuggle Patch and the Snuggle Suit was designed specifically for safe sleep, and the unique pocket-and-snap system is patent pending. It's the only way to safely use the Snuggle Patch in the crib.
When baby is not sleeping, the Snuggle Patch can also be looped around a pacifier, attached to a stroller, or tucked into the Mama Midi's internal pocket. Never attach the Snuggle Patch to a pacifier during sleep. Pacifier attachments should only be used while baby is awake and supervised.
Snuggle Stitch in the NICU
Is the Snuggle Patch safe to bring into the NICU?
Based on conversations with NICU nurses, it is often encouraged to bring in something that smells like you (e.g. bonding hearts, breast pads, etc.) for your baby's isolette, as babies in the NICU are constantly monitored by professionals. That said, every hospital has its own protocols, so please always check with your medical team before bringing any item into the NICU.
Can I use the Snuggle Suit in the NICU?
Snuggle Stitch offers the Snuggle Suit in a preemie size, but please always follow your hospital's specific guidelines on what your baby should wear during their NICU stay. Hospital staff will let you know when and how outside clothing can be used.
Growing With Your Baby
How can I keep using the Snuggle Patch as my baby gets older?
The Snuggle Patch's attachment loop was designed to also be able to loop onto a pacifier. As babies get older, the Snuggle Patch can become a comfort item beyond the crib. Many families loop the Patch onto a pacifier, attach it to a stroller, or bring it along for daycare. It's made to travel wherever your baby needs that extra comfort.
Never attach the Snuggle Patch to a pacifier during sleep. Pacifier attachments should only be used while baby is awake and supervised.
Sizing & Fit
What sizes does the Mama Midi come in?
The Mama Midi is available in S/M and L/XL. The relaxed, robe-style fit is forgiving across body shapes and is designed to accommodate the changes of pregnancy and postpartum.
What sizes does the Snuggle Suit come in?

What is your return policy?
At Snuggle Stitch, every piece is designed to be deeply personal. Because our products are intended to carry a mother's scent and be worn close to the skin, we are unable to accept returns or exchanges at this time.
This policy is rooted in both hygiene and purpose. Once an item has been worn, even briefly, it becomes part of a unique scent bonding experience. Allowing returns would compromise the integrity of that experience for another family.
You can find our full returns and exchanges policy here.
